Costador Terroirs
Joan Franquet of COSTADOR TERROIRS works with Organic Agriculture in the mountain vineyards of Tarragona. The vineyards are very old, between 60 to 110 years with different “terroirs” (slake, clay and limestone). They are located in altitudes between 400 to 800 meters and with the high contrast of temperatures, the grapes can mature slowly all while preserving freshness & acidity. Joan does everything from managing the vineyards, picking the grapes and the fermentation & aging process. He manages to preserve the authentic flavour and taste of the grapes, and does the fermentations native yeasts. The majority of the fermentation process is done in amphora, stainless steel tanks & several neutral oak barrels. The aging is done in amphorae & several oak barrels as well. The final wines are real & authentic with natural complexities. Joan works with traditional Catalan grape varieties: Grenache, Carignan, Dark Sumoll, Trepat, Macabeu, Xarel.lo, Sumoll blanc, and Parellada.
